What is Rolfing®?

Named after its founder, Dr. Ida. P. Rolf, Rolfing® is a form of structural integration bodywork that balances and aligns the body by working on the soft connective tissue called fascia. Rolfing increases a person’s awareness of the body in a manner that stimulates a neurological re-patterning in the brain so that the body recognizes a new way of moving and relating to gravity. Rolfing® works to unwind deeply ingrained patterns and restore strength and flow in a holistic manner.

Rolfing® is a therapeutic process, using a somatic approach and manual therapy, that explores the potential for long-lasting change in how you use and experience your body. Effortful habits are replaced with feelings of comfort, ease of movement and posture, and a sense of whole-body coherence. Essentially, the Rolfing® process enables the body to regain the natural integrity of its form, thus enhancing postural efficiency, reduction of chronic pain and freedom of movement.

How can Rolfing® benefit me?

Because all parts of the body are addressed over 10 sessions, Rolfing® can be helpful for many issues including but not limited to pain, restriction, weakness, and/or excessive tension in the back, neck, jaw, shoulders, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and feet. It can also be useful for overuse injuries and nerve impingement problems such as sciatica and carpal tunnel. Rolfing is famous for producing big changes in posture & alignment as the body’s relationship to gravity improves.

Rolfing is a therapeutic process which zooms out and views you as a whole person. Rather than focusing only on short-term relief of localized symptoms, we look to make the entire system more balanced and resilient to produce lasting changes in how you feel, move, and breathe in your body. Specifically, we work with fascia and the nervous system, both of which extend throughout the body and connect everything to everything else. For some people, these physical changes may be accompanied by psychoemotional and higher consciousness. As Rolfers™, we do not force any kind of change but rather seek to meet you where you are and guide you towards what Ida Rolf referred to as improved structural integration in service of your goals.

We will work collaboratively so that you may gain an embodied understanding of how your alignment, movement, and perhaps even psychoemotional habits may be creating discomfort. We will find resolution both within and beyond our work together.
